We have recently noticed an uptick in calls from our members reporting phone calls from someone claiming to be either from Evergy or FreeState demanding payment of past due balances. The person on the end of the line wanted to be paid by a pre-paid credit card. THIS IS A PHONE SCAM.

Phone scammers and how they use technology to fool members are incredibly concerning. We cannot rely on caller ID anymore as scammers can duplicate trusted phone numbers and trick those we care about into financially harmful situations.

We want to remind our members that if FreeState needs to get in touch with you, we will always identify ourselves by first and last name. And, our member service representatives will also ask you to verify your information as well. FreeState will not call you after hours to demand payment. Our business offices are open Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. You will never be contacted after hours regarding your bill.

The only reason a FreeState employee would contact you after hours is a service emergency, and, in that case, they will identify themselves.

FreeState Will Not:

  • CALL DEMANDING PAYMENT. We make automated phone calls to alert members of past balances or delinquent accounts. You will only receive a call from an employee about your bill during regular business hours.
  • DEMAND PAYMENT WITH A PRE-PAID CREDIT CARD. We have multiple paying options. You will not be restricted to only one option to pay your bill.
  • WHEN IN DOUBT, HANG UP. Never give out any personal information over the phone. Do not give out any bank information over the phone. We want our members to stay safe.
